Services

At Churnet Valley Vets we believe that the best care for your pet can be achieved when owner, vet and nursing staff work together. We aim to know our patients and their owners individually and to offer the continuity of care that your pet and you both expect and deserve.

WELLNESS EXAMS

Keep your pet healthy with our thorough wellness exams. Our experienced veterinarians will assess your pet's overall health and provide personalized care.

LABWORK

Churnet Valley Vets has the facility to run in-house laboratory tests on bloods, urine samples and skin scrapes. There are many other laboratory tests that can be performed to diagnose specific diseases. These are sent to outside laboratories and results take a few days to come back.

MICROCHIPPING

Micro chipping provides a form of identification that your pet carries for life. A microchip is implanted under the skin, between the shoulder blades and, when scanned by a microchip scanner, a number, unique to your pet, is displayed. The number is registered with PetLog, together with details of your address and telephone numbers and any regular medication that your pet may require.

EMERGENCY CARE

Count on us for reliable emergency veterinary care. Our clinic is equipped to handle urgent medical situations and provide prompt attention to your pet.

FLEA CONTROL

For successful flea control, you need to treat both your pet and its environment, with products that are effective and will kill both adult and immature fleas. Not all products are equally effective and those bought from vets are usually much better than those that can be bought from pet shops or supermarkets. It is also important to treat ALL cats and dogs in the household. We offer many different flea treatments depending on pet and owner needs which we are happy to discuss.

CONSULTATIONS

Consultations are by appointment. Monday to Friday between 9.00am - 10.30am and 4.00pm - 6.20pm. Saturdays between 9.00am - 12.00pm.

If you have difficulty coming to the surgery within these times, it may be possible to make alternative arrangements.

TELEPHONE ADVICE

We can offer advice over the telephone.

Out of normal surgery hours, emergency cases can be seen at the specialised emergency clinic, Vets Now. Vets Now is manned by a qualified team of vets and nurses who work entirely in emergency veterinary medicine. The staff only provide emergency cover out of normal hours, so are fresh to deal with emergencies.

WORMING

Routine worming of your pet is important not only for their health but for yours and your children’s too.

VACCINATIONS

Safeguard your pet against common diseases with our comprehensive vaccination programs. Our team will guide you through the vaccination schedule for your pet's optimal health.

NEUTERING

We perform routine neutering at Churnet Valley Vets.  We would recommend that your cats and dogs are neutered at about 6 months of age.  This rarely causes problems as it is unusual for cats to become sexually active before that age, or for bitches to come into season before 6 months.

DIETS

We believe there’s more than one way to feed your pet. There are some excellent diets available on the market, whether you want to feed your dog tinned food with mixer biscuit or complete food which is usually dried. Feeding home-made diets is acceptable, but can be more difficult to obtain an optimal nutritional balance.

We stock or can get into order on a next day basis all the life stage and prescription diets.

SURGERY

Routine and non routine surgical procedures are performed with precision and care. We prioritise the safety and comfort of your pet throughout the surgical process.

REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS

Some animals need lifelong medication. The general policy is to re-assess an animal requiring repeat prescriptions every 6 months, but this may vary with individual circumstances (for example, some pets with heart conditions require re-examination every 2-3 months, or even every month).

The current prices for the most commonly prescribed medications are listed below.

HOME VISITS

We would ask you please, if at all possible, to bring your pet to the surgery - it helps enormously if all of our facilities are at hand, particularly in an emergency. However we do understand that sometimes a house call is essential or desirable as far as the client is concerned. If this is the case we will be happy to make a home visit. Please try to telephone before 10am if you need such a visit. A charge is made for the call out.

This practice has a policy of checking all animals prior to surgery.  Each animal receives a 2 stage pre-surgical pain relief and full anaesthetic monitoring by a qualified veterinary nurse.  We optimise safety by using intravenous catheters on all patients and Isoflurane, the safest anaesthetic for pets.  When possible, soluble stitches are used.

Please ask for estimate of the procedure your pet requires.

All vaccinations include a full examination and discussion about your pet's health.

We believe in charging realistic professional fees whilst keeping drug prices as reasonable as possible.
